Red salamander

Biology

The red salamander uses its bright red colour as a warning sign: Besides producing a highly toxic secretion on the dorsal surface, its bright colour also acts as a defence mechanism. The female lays about 70 eggs, which are attached to the underside of logs or rocks. Adults hibernate during winter.

Conservation

Deforestation, siltation, and pollution of waterways are some of the threats this species faces.

Curiosities

To ward off predators, the red salamander raises its tail and waves it.
