Razorfish

Biology

Due to its thin and elongated body, it is know as razorfish. It is a small fish and its dorsal surface is covered by protective bony plates. It is dark as a juvenile, and when mature their body lightens to a silver colour, and they develop a dark longitudinal line. It swims in synchronized schools in shallow coastal waters, among corals, seagrasses or within long spine urchins, which protect them from predators. It feeds on minute crustaceans and zooplankton that it sucks in with its long toothless snout.

Curiosities

The razorfish has a remarkable way of protecting from predators: it adopts a head-down tail-up position as an adaptation for hiding among sea urchin spines.
