Voltar

Saddle anemonefish

Biology

This is the only known clown-fish without any stripes covering its body in the adult stage. It is commonly found in pairs, in murky and muddy waters, in sheltered lagoons. It forms a symbiotic relationship with a small number of anemones, being immune to the poison of its tentacles due to the mucus that covers its skin. It feeds on zooplankton and algae.

Conservation

This species might be at risk, due to loss of its habitat - the coral reefs.

Curiosities

Like all clownfishes, this species can experience a change in sex. They are protandric hermaphrodites; that is, they start life as males and if the dominant female dies, one of the male changes sex and takes her place.
