Sailfin snapper

Biology

The sailfin snapper has a yellowish body, with blue stripes along the sides, a large black spot on the upper tail base, and two orange bars on the head. It occurs over sand bottoms in the vicinity of coral reefs, where it feeds on fishes and sand-dwelling crustaceans and molluscs.

Conservation

Overfishing is the main threat to this species, which is caught mostly with handlines and bottom trawls.

Curiosities

This fish is usually seen singly, aggregating to spawn along seaward reefs.
