Biology

This fish is easily recognized by the golden stripes along its body. Inhabits rocky and sandy bottoms covered with seagrass, which it patrols in large shoals. The salema is a hermaphroditic species, in which the male can convert into a female. It is herbivorous, but juveniles may feed on small crustaceans.

Curiosities

After feeding on certain algae, these fish may become toxic. When consumed by man, they can cause hallucinations that can last for several hours.
