Sohal surgeonfish

Biology

The sohal surgeonfish lives in tropical and shallow reefs. Its body is vividly blue with white stripes stretching along its entire length. It can be found in schools but only when it is young. In adulthood it becomes solitary, very territorial and extremely aggressive. To defend itself, uses the blades it has near the caudal fin to inflict deep wounds.

Conservation

This fish lives exclusively in coral reefs where it plays a major role, feeding on algae that are found all over the coral reefs, keeping it clean.

Curiosities

Unlike other surgeonfishes, the spines this species has on its caudal fins are not venomous.
