Voltar

Southern fiddler

Biology

The southern fiddler is easily identifiable by the triangular pattern behind its eyes. It is very common near the coast, in areas protected by rock reefs with sandy bottoms and marine grass prairies. It may sometimes be found in estuarine areas. It feeds on benthic (i.e., bottom-dwelling) invertebrates.

Curiosities

It is ovoviviparous, the embryos develop inside eggs, but remain in the mother's body until they are ready to hatch. The capsule around the embryos (a maximum of 3) is golden in colour.
