Split-level hogfish

Biology

As a juvenile, this hogfish has a purple body with yellow spots and lives hidden inside rocky caves. When it reaches adulthood, at about five centimetres in length, in just a week it changes colour, losing the yellow spots and becoming half dark and half white. By then this hogfish ventures into deeper water but never too far from the caves.

Like other species of its family, it is a cleaner fish.
