Striped catshark

Biology

The striped catshark got its name due to the horizontal black stripes that it has on its greyish body. This characteristic allows it to live concealed among the rocky reefs of the coastal waters that it inhabits. Nocturnal, this catshark can be found resting in caves and kelp beds during the day.

Conservation

This fish finds protection amongst kelp forests, composed of brown algae that dominate nutrient-rich areas and cold temperate places. This habitat shelters a wide variety of species, many of them of high commercial value, and is dominated by the giant-kelp, the largest existing brown algae.

Curiosities

The female produces two eggs, protected by a capsule that attaches to algae.
