Biology

The genus Colocasia belongs to the Araceae family and includes a little more than a dozen perennial species. Also known as “Elephant’s ears”, its leaves are quite large, and can even hide the big flowers and fruits they grow. Its tubers are an important food source worldwide.

Conservation

The taro has a wide distribution and is cultivated in tropical and sub-tropical countries as a vital staple food crop. Colocasia esculenta is the 14th most widely consumed vegetable on earth.
