Umbrella plant

Biology

The umbrella plant owes its name to the shape of its leaves, evergreen, narrow and upright. The plant has thin and resistant stalks, and develops either in direct sunlight or in shady environments. This species grows up to one and a half metre in height, in swamps, wet grasslands and beside streams.

Conservation

Apparently this species has been introduced in many countries in Asia, Oceania and the Americas. Though there is little information on the population status, it is thought that they have been increasing in number.

Curiosities

In the same family, Cyperaceae, are known and important plants such as the papyrus (Cyperus papirus).
