Oceanário de Lisboa launched a new aquarium

Garden eels, take a sneak peak!

The Oceanário de Lisboa, launched an aquarium with two new species, in the tropical Indian" gallery.
This new project is dedicated to a very peculiar and shy fish that lives on sandy bottoms, the garden eels.

In this aquarium over 20 garden eels belonging to two different species, the garden-eel and the spoted garden eel and the splendid garden eel, could be observed.
With very large eyes and a very small pectoral fins, these seemingly small eels can reach 50 cm in length.
They live in holes that build to hide and only come partially out to feed, facing the current. The holes are "non-transferable" but they can build a new hole with a more strategic location to capture food.

The garden eels lives in colonies with many thousands of individuals, creating a scenario similar to a garden.

These species have a wide distribution in the Indo-Pacific and form these "gardens" in coastal areas with sandy bottom, between 15 and 45 metres deep.
